Source Program Lister --------------------- Program Features

Many C/C++ software development Integrated Development Environments (IDE) have very limited support for generating program listings. They may, for example, print source programs with nice color coding to represent syntax-specific information (e.g., comments in one color, keywords in another, etc.), but be lacking in basic listing formatting capabilities.

Common Windows^® text editors (NotePad & WordPad) can be used, but they are not a good solution either. Although NotePad provides page headers containing the filename and footers with page numbers, neither allows the user to control the print size or force page breaks.

The retiSoft Source Program Lister can be used to "print" any ASCII text file, but has features specifically aimed at C, C++, or assembly language source program listings. The key features of this program are:

• Control page orientation: Programmers have personal preferences (or organizations have standards) regarding line lengths. This program allows the user to specify landscape orientation to prevent line wrapping when long (or deeply indented) source lines are used.

• Control type size: The amount of information on a page is controlled by the type size. This program allows the user to specify text size between 8 and 12 points (in 1 pt increments) and thereby control the number of characters that can be printed in each line and the number of lines on each page.

• Control header information: This program includes a page header that includes a date/time stamp that shows when the listing was generated and page counter. The user can additionally specify whether just the filename or the filename with the full path qualification is included.

• Force page breaks: Listings can be much easier to use if the programmer can force page breaks. For example, functions are easier to find if they always begin at the top of a page. This program provides embedded codes that programmers can use to force the listing to move to the top of the next page before resuming.

The retiSoft Source Program Lister works through standard Windows^® printer services and therefore can output to any printer or pseudo-printer installed on your system. This includes fax programs and Adobe^® Acrobat^® (to create PDF files for electronic archives and distribution).
